Friday night, the Minnesota Twins will take the field behind Kyle Gibson as they face off against the Detroit Tigers and Drew Smyly.  Gibson makes his 13th start as Smyly makes his 10th start and 13th appearance.

Kyle Gibson evened his record to 5- 5 with a 3.91 ERA after getting a win his last time out. In that start, Gibson pitched 7 scoreless innings and allowed just 3 hits and 3 walks while striking out 5.  It was the 2nd time in 3 starts that Gibson didn’t allow a single run in a start.  In just his 2nd season, Gibson has already improved on his rookie season in 2013 when he went 2 – 4 with a 6.53 ERA in 10 starts.

Last season, Gibson didn’t face the Tigers but he has a start against Detroit this season.  In that outing, Gibson took the loss after getting lit up in just 2 innings of work. He allowed 6 runs on 7 hits (including a homer) as he walked 1 and struck out 1.

Drew Smyly comes into this one with a 3 – 4 record and a 3.81 ERA after getting the win his last time out.  He allowed 2 runs on 5 hits in 6 innings with a walk and 4 strikeouts.  Along with a win, Smyly comes in with a few extra days of rest after a rainout moved his original start. In 2013, Smyly made 63 appearances out of the bullpen and posted a 6 – 0 record with 2 saves and a 2.37 ERA. 

Last season, Smyly was 1 – 0 with a 2.08 ERA in 10 appearances against the Twins.  And overall, he has pitched well against the Minnesota lineup, holding them to a .174 average with just 8 hits and 3 RBIs in 46 at-bats.
