Minnesota has finished no better than 22 games out of first for each of the past three seasons and even though they'll be the first ones to tell you its still a rebuilding process, 2014 is expected to start seeing some results in the climb back to dominance. Likewise, those within the White Sox organization will tell you that even though they're not expected to contend in 2014, a nice mix of youth and experience could have them fighting come September.
Taking the bump for Minnesota on Opening Day is free agent acquisition Ricky Nolasco. After pitching in the NL his entire career Nolasco hopes a switch to the American League will lead to a breakout from mediocrity. Nolasco signed a 4 year $49 million contract this offseason after going 8-3 down the stretch when acquired by the Dodgers. His record and ERA of 3.52 was especially impressive after starting off 5-8 in Miami a year ago.
The White Sox counter with Cy Young hopeful Chris Sale. The slender lefty tossed 4 complete games a year ago but had a disappointing W/L record of 11-14, especially after a 17-8 slate his first year as a starter in 2012. Sale was a victim of poor run support in 2013 with Chicago scoring 2 runs or less in 1/3 of his starts. Sale went .500 a year ago against the Twins posting a 1-1 record in 2 starts. Minnesota's current roster has minimum experience against Sale posting a .263 average in only 76 total AB.
