The two teams at the bottom of the standings in the American League Central will compete on Friday night at U.S. Cellular Field. The visiting Minnesota Twins will send veteran right-hander Phil Hughes (15-9) to the mound take on the third-year player from Colombia, left-hander Jose Quintana (7-10).

Hughes has been a bright spot for the otherwise disappointing Twins. In 29 starts, he has a 3.55 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, and .271 BAA. He allows too many hits, but he doesn’t walk many (15), which equals out those numbers. Overall on the season, he has allowed 74 earned runs off 200 hits in 187.2 innings. In his last 10 starts, he has gone just 5-4, but has pitched well enough to be 10-0. He has allowed 4 or more earned runs in just 2 starts and in his 4 losses, the Twins have scored a total of 6 runs.

The White Sox will be led in this game by a pitcher that has done well this season. Quintana hasn’t been lighting up the stat sheets around baseball, but he has been a consistent pitcher that currently has a 3.38 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, and .255 BAA. He has hit a bit of a rough patch in the past couple of months, going just 1-3 since the start of August. In his career against current members of the Twins, he has allowed 30 hits in 111 at-bats, including 8 hits allowed to Joe Mauer with 2 home runs.
