Monday afternoon, Phil Hughes (14 – 9, 3.70 ERA) gets the call for the Minnesota Twins as they take on Kevin Gausman (7 – 6, 3.84 ERA) and the Baltimore Orioles.  Hughes will make his 28th start of the season as Gausman makes his 16th start.

Phil Hughes took the loss in his last outing and it ended his 4 game win streak.  In the loss, Hughes gave up 4 runs and 7 hits in 7.2 innings of work.  He struck out 4 batters without issuing a single walk.   Hughes has made a complete turnaround since coming to Minnesota this season after beginning his career with the New York Yankees.  He is 6 - 4 in his last 10 starts but his record could have easily been better.  Last season, Hughes was just 4 – 14 with a 5.19 ERA in 29 starts and a relief appearance for the Yankees.

In 2013, Hughes was 0 – 1 with a 6.00 ERA in 3 starts against Baltimore.  Earlier this season, Hughes beat the Orioles after holding them to 2 runs and 6 hits (including a homer) in 6.1 innings of work.

Kevin Gausman took his 2nd straight loss in his last outing.  He allowed 3 runs and 6 hits in 4 innings of work with 4 strikeouts and no walks.  But his offense couldn’t produce and he took the defeat.  Gausman has been up and down in recent starts and is just 4 – 4 in his last 10 starts.  Last season, Gausman started 5 games and made 15 relief appearances in his rookie season en route to a 3 -5 record and a 5.66 ERA.

In 2013, Gausman didn’t face the Twins and has only seen 2 of the Minnesota hitters before.  Eduardo Nunez is 1 for 3 against Gausman while Kurt Suzuki is 2 for 2.
