Saturday afternoon, Matt Garza will take the hill for the Milwaukee Brewers as they square off against Edinson Volquez and the Pittsburgh Pirates.  It will be Garza’s 13th start as Volquez makes his 12th start and 13th appearance.

Matt Garza improved his record to 3 - 4 with a 4.42 ERA after getting the win in his last start.   In that outing, Garza pitched 6.1 shutout innings and allowed just 6 hits and 2 walks while striking out 8. It was the first time all season that Garza had shutout an opposing team.  Last season, Garza went 10 – 6 with an ERA of 3.82 in 24 starts for the Chicago Cubs and Texas Rangers.

In 2013, Garza went 0 -1 with an ERA of 3.00 in 2 starts against the Pirates.  This season, Garza pitched to a no-decision against Pittsburgh after giving up 6 runs on 8 hits in 5 innings of work.                    

Edinson Volquez picked up the win his last time out and that took his record to 3- 4 with a 4.25 ERA.  In that start, Volquez allowed 2 runs on 5 hits (including a home run) in 5 innings as he walked 1 and struck out 6.  If Volquez gets on a winning streak, he should be able to post better results than he did in 2013 when he went 9 – 12 with an ERA of 5.47 in 32 starts for the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres.

Last season, Volquez was 2 – 0 with a 2.19 ERA in 2 starts against the Brewers.  This season, Volquez picked up a win and a no-decision in back to back starts against the Brewers after allowing 4 runs on 12 hits in 13.1 innings.
