Thursday night, the Milwaukee Brewers and Yovani Gallardo will face the Pittsburgh Pirates and Edinson Volquez.  Gallardo will make his 4th start of the season as Volquez makes his 3rd. 

 Yovani Gallardo has been stellar for the Brewers this season and one of the reasons Milwaukee is doing so well.  In three starts, Gallardo is 2 – 0 with an ERA of 0.96.  His last start was a no decision against Pittsburgh and Edinson Volquez where he went 6 innings and surrendered 2 runs on 6 hits.   If Gallardo keeps pitching well, 2014’s results will be much better than 2013’s 12 – 10 record and 4.18 ERA in 31 starts.

Last season, Gallardo went 2 – 2 in 5 starts against the Pirates.  In his career, he has pitched well against the Pirates lineup but he will need to keep an eye on Andrew McCutchen.  McCutchen is batting .325 with 2 home runs and 5 RBIs against Gallardo.

Edinson Volquez will face the Brewers for the 2nd straight time.  He got a no decision after a 6.1 inning effort where he allowed 2 runs on 4 hits.  Volquez has yet to get a decision so far this season despite decent outings.  And he is pitching much better than last season when he put up a 9 - 12 record with an ERA of 5.71. 

In 2013, Volquez was 2 – 0 in 2 starts against the Brewers with an ERA of 2.19.  He gave up just 3 runs on 11 hits in only 12.1 innings.   Milwaukee’s Carlos Gomez is hitting .353 against Volquez with 3 home runs and 3 RBIs.
