Thursday night the Milwaukee Brewers will start Marco Estrada against the Philadelphia Phillies and Cliff Lee.   Estrada will be making his second start of the season while Lee will be making his third.

Marco Estrada pitched 5.2 innings in his first start of the year to a no decision.  He gave up 2 runs on 4 hits (including a home run) with 3 walks while striking out 6 to start the season with an ERA of 1.59.   If that sounds like a lot in a little over 5 innings, it’s because it was.  Estrada threw 102 pitches in the start and will have to minimize the pitch count as the season progresses.  In 2013, Estrada went 7 – 4 in 21 starts with an ERA of 3.87.

Last season Estrada didn’t face the Phillies but he has some experience against the lineup.  Ryan Howard has hit Estrada hard with 3 hits (including a home run) and 3 RBIs in 7 at-bats. 

Cliff Lee comes into this matchup with a 2 – 0 record in his first two starts of the season.  Lee’s ERA is high at 6.00 (he’s given up 8 runs on 21 hits in 12 innings) but he has struck out 7 while issuing just one walk.  Last year, Lee went 14 – 8 in 31 starts with an ERA of 2.87 (which was one of the lowest of his career).   And Lee still had a high strikeout to walk ratio of 6.94. 

Lee started 2 games against Milwaukee in 2013 and came away with a 1 – 0 record and an ERA of 3.68.   He'll be keeping an eye on Ryan Braun as Braun has had some success against him.  Braun is a career .435 hitter against Lee with 10 hits (including 3 homers) and 3 RBIs in 23 at-bats.
