Thursday afternoon, Yovani Gallardo (8 – 10, 3.46 ERA) gets the call for the Milwaukee Brewers as they face David Holmberg (1 -2, 5.25 ERA) and the Cincinnati Reds.  Gallardo will be making his 32nd start as Holmberg makes his 5th start and 7th appearance.

Yovani Gallardo had a great start his last time out but failed to get the decision.   Gallardo pitched 7 innings of shutout ball and allowed 5 hits and a walk while striking out 11. But the bullpen couldn’t hold the lead and Gallardo got a no-decision.  Gallardo has struggled as of late and hasn’t had a victory since mid-August.  He is just 3 -5 in his last 10 starts.  In 2013, Gallardo finished the year with a 12 -10 record and a 4.18 ERA in 31 starts.

Last season, Gallardo was 2 -1 with a 3.18 ERA in 5 starts against the Reds.  This season, he is 0 – 2 against Cincinnati in 4 meetings including one less than 2 weeks ago.

David Holmberg pitched to a loss in his last start despite a fine effort from the young lefty.  Holmberg allowed just 2 runs (on 2 solo homers) and 5 hits through 6 innings as he walked 3 and struck out 3.  But his offense struggled to support him and he ended up with the defeat.  Holmberg is on his 2nd stint with the Reds this season after going 2 – 6 with a 4.66 ERA in 18 starts at Triple-A Louisville.  Last season, he pitched to a no-decision in one start for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Holmberg’s lone victory on the season came against the Brewers on September 13th.  In that outing, Holmberg held Milwaukee to a run (on a solo home run) and 2 hits through 6 innings of work.
