Tuesday night the Miami Marlins will start Henderson Alvarez against Gio Gonzalez and the Washington Nationals.  Each pitcher will be making their second starts of the season.

Henderson Alvarez had a no –hitter last season for the Marlins but he didn’t look like the same pitcher during his first outing of this season.  His day lasted just 3 innings as he surrendered 6 runs on 7 hits and 2 walks.   The start was bad even for a pitcher that has never had a winning record in his previous three seasons as a major league pitcher.

Last season, Alvarez lost all three starts that he had against the Nationals.  In his career, he has faced most of the Washington lineup and he will have to pay close attention to Bryce Harper.  Harper has faced Alvarez 10 times and come away with 5 hits, including 2 home runs and 4 RBIs 

Gio Gonzalez comes into this game after a winning effort in his first start based on a 6 inning outing where he gave up just 1 run on 3 hits while striking out 6.  The start marked a great result for the pitcher that ended the 2013 season with an 11 – 8 record in 32 starts and a 9.0 strikeout to walk ratio (the highest of his career). 

Gonzalez has been tough on the Marlins lineup in the past, holding them to a collective .193 average with just 16 hits in 83 at-bats.  Jeff Mathis has faced Gonzalez the most with 14 at-bats but Greg Dobbs has the most success with 2 hits and an RBI in 4 at-bats.
