The impressive right-hander Henderson Alvarez will take the mound for the Miami Marlins on Sunday afternoon and will be facing rookie Marco Gonzales and the St. Louis Cardinals.

Henderson Alvarez pitched well enough to get the win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday, but instead he took the no decision in a game the Marlins ended up winning 5-4. Alvarez pitched seven innings in that game and gave up just two earned runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out three. Through 17 starts, Alvarez is 5-3 with an excellent 2.33 ERA and he has only given up four home runs on 108 innings.

Cardinals outfielder Peter Bourjos has two hits in his six at-bats against Alvarez with no RBI and two strikeouts. Veteran Jhonny Peralta is 0-for-6 against the right-hander with two strikeouts.

On Tuesday, Marco Gonzales had a rough start against the San Francisco Giants on the road and ended up suffering his first Major League loss. He went 4.1 innings in that start and gave up five runs on seven hits while striking out two batters and walking four. Through two starts this season, Gonzales is now 0-1 with a 9.64 ERA and he has given up 14 hits in 9.1 innings.

The Marlins will be going up against Gonzales for the first time on Sunday. They can expect to see his 90 mph fastball about 65 percent of the time, and he'll also mix in a curveball and a changeup.
