Jose Fernandez' $635,000 contract is looking like it might be the best deal in baseball in 2014. The Marlins send their ace to the mound in an effort to stay towards the top of the NL East as they visit Philadelphia and A.J. Burnett (0-1) to kick off the weekend. Fernandez (2-0) was expected to have a great year after posting a 2.19 ERA in 28 games in his rookie of the year season and he's delivered. Fernandez has allowed just 1 run in his two starts this season while striking out 17 in 12.2 IP.

The fun-loving Fernandez made 3 starts against the Phillies a year ago but was nothing short of dominant. In his first two appearances against Philadelphia, Fernandez pitched a combined 13 innings allowing just 3 hits and O ER. Once Philly got some experience against the right-hander they finally scored a single run as Fernandez pitched 5 innings and allowed 5 hits. All told Fernandez was 1-0 with a 0.50 ERA against Philadelphia in 2013.

A.J. Burnett's debut season with the Phillies has resulted in 2-straight Philadelphia losses. Burnett didn't pitch bad in his first start of the year allowing just one run to the Rangers but was roughed up by the Cubs Sunday allowing 8 runs in just 5.2 IP.

Burnett did not make a start against Miami last season when he was a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates. He won't mind seeing the injured Rafael Furcal out of the Marlins lineup as the veteran SS has gone 13-38 (.342) against the pitcher in his career. Miami skipper Mike Redmond would be wise to give Greg Dobbs the start based on his past against Burnett (7-11, .636 AVG.)
