On Saturday night, veteran right-hander Brad Penny (0-0) is expected to make his first start since 2012 when the Miami Marlins go up against Alfredo Simon (12-7) and the Cincinnati Reds.

Brad Penny has been in the minors for the Marlins all season and he has pitched pretty well considering he didn't throw a pitch in 2013. In seven starts between Double-A and Triple-A, he had a 3.05 ERA and he struck out 30 batters in 38.1 innings of work. He also showed some good control in those starts by walking just 2.1 batters per nine innings.

Reds outfielder Jay Bruce has five hits in his nine plate appearances versus Penny with a double and two RBI. Catcher Brayan Pena is hitless against the right-hander in three at-bats.

All-Star Alfredo Simon lost his fourth consecutive game on Monday when he was defeated by the Cleveland Indians on the road. He pitched five innings in that outing and allowed five runs on six hits while walking three batters and striking out just one. He still has a solid 3.07 ERA on the season, but he has a 5.06 ERA in his last four starts.

Marlins veteran Reed Johnson has one hit in two career at-bats against Simon with a double. First baseman Garrett Jones has zero hits in seven at-bats against him with no walks and three strikeouts.
