Friday afternoon, the Miami Marlins and Nathan Eovaldi will take on the Chicago Cubs and Jason Hammel. Eovaldi makes his 13th start as Hammel makes his 12th.

Nathan Eovaldi pitched to a no-decision in his last outing and that left his record at 4 – 2 with a 3.24 ERA. In that start, Eovaldi gave up just 2 runs on 6 hits in 8 innings of work.  He didn’t issue any walks and struck out 4 in one of his better starts this season. Last season, Eovaldi went 4 - 6 with a 3.39 ERA in 18 starts.

In 2013, Eovaldi didn’t face the Cubs and he has only face one of their hitters in his career.  Chicago’s Nate Schierholtz is 1 for 3 with an RBI against the right-hander.

Jason Hammel improved his record to 6 – 3 with a 2.78 ERA after getting the win in his last outing.  In the start, Hammel pitched 7 shutout innings and allowed just 4 hits without walking a single batter and striking out 8.  It was the 2nd time this season that Hammel had failed to allow a single run in a start. In 2013, Hammel went 7 – 8 with a save and a 4.97 ERA in 23 starts and 3 relief appearances for the Baltimore Orioles.

Last season, Hammel didn’t face the Marlins but he has seen some of their hitters in the past. Rafael Furcal is batting .333 with 2 RBIs against Hammel.
