Tuesday night, the Miami Marlins and Jose Fernandez will take on the Atlanta Braves and Alex Wood.  It will be the 5th start for both pitchers.

Jose Fernandez had a good start his last time out but he didn’t get the decision.  In 7 innings of work, he gave up 3 runs on 4 hits (including a home run) without a single walk while striking out 10.  It was a solid effort after losing his first game of the season in his 3rd start.  Overall, Fernandez is 2 – 1 with an ERA of 2.66.  Last season, Fernandez went 12 – 6 with an ERA of 2.19 in 28 starts during his rookie year.      

In 2013, Fernandez went 1 – 1 with a 2.08 ERA in 2 starts against Atlanta.  His biggest concern will be the Braves’ Freddie Freeman.  Freeman is 3 of 6 with a homer and 2 RBIs against Fernandez. 

Alex Wood took the loss in his last start despite a solid outing where he only surrendered a run on 8 hits with a walk and 7 strikeouts in 8 innings.  But when your offense can’t score a run, you get the loss.  This season, Wood is 2 – 2 with a 1.67 ERA.  In his rookie season in 2013, Wood went 3 – 3 with a 3.13 ERA in 11 starts and 20 relief appearances.

Last season, Wood was 0 – 1 with a 5.56 ERA in 2 starts and 2 relief appearances against the Marlins.  He gave up 7 runs on 13 hits in 11.1 innings of work.   Miami’s Jeff Mathis has torched Wood with a career .750 average, 1 home run and 3 RBIs when facing the lefthander.
