Thursday afternoon, the Los Angeles Dodgers will send Hyun-Jin Ryu to the mound to face Madison Bumgarner and the San Francisco Giants.  It will be Ryu’s fifth start of the season and Bumgarner’s fourth. 

Hyun-Jin Ryu has given the Dodgers a few quality starts so far this season.  His last start was a masterpiece as he threw 7 scoreless innings, surrendering just 2 hits and a walk while striking out 8.   Getting the win pushed his record to 2 – 1 with an ERA of 2.57.   Ryu is on pace to match or better last years 14 – 8 record with a 3.00 ERA in 30 starts.

Last season, Ryu went 2 – 2 with a 2.48 ERA in 5 starts against the Giants.  The San Francisco lineup did well against Ryu with Hunter Pence having the best results.  Pence is 6 of 15 with 2 doubles and 5 RBIs when facing Ryu. 

Madison Bumgarner has had a solid start to the season as well.   He is 2 – 0 with an ERA of 3.31 and he is helping his own cause at the plate as well.  If there is concern, it is the number of pitches he has had to throw in the last two starts.  He is averaging 113 pitches in a just a little over 6 innings per start and those numbers would be the highest of his career if he continues the pace.

In 2013, Bumgarner was 3 – 1 with an ERA of 1.93 in 4 starts against the Dodgers.   Bumgarner allowed 7 runs on 15 hits (including 3 home runs) in 28 innings with 3 walks and 26 strikeouts.  If there is any Dodger for Bumgarner to look out for it will be Juan Uribe.  Uribe is batting .261 with 2 doubles, a home run and 3 RBIs against Bumgarner.
