The Dodgers are apparently going to be the MLB spotlight team over the course of the 2014 season. Not only has LA already played 2 regulation games in an international series last weekend, they'll be the Sunday Night Baseball game on the unofficial opening day of the season. The Padres have followed the formula the past two seasons of starting slow in the first half only to tear it up after the All-Star break but they'd love to roar out of the gates with a win against a division rival.

San Diego is making an early run for the DL champions of baseball as injuries to pitchers Josh Johnson, Cory Luebke, and Joe Wieland push Andrew Cashner into the opening day start. The 5th year player appeared in 31 games a year ago in his first full season as a starter. In 26 starts last year Cashner compiled a 10-9 record with a 3.09 ERA. Although Cashner lost both starts against LA last year, he pitched well going 8 innings in a 3-1 loss and 7 innings in a 1-0 defeat in his last start of the season.

The Dodgers have jumped out of the gates by beating Arizona 3-1 and 7-5 to open the 2014 season a week ago in Sydney, Australia. Starting pitchers Clayton Kershaw and Hyun-jin Ryu were both able to get victories in their 1st starts of the season while Ryu will be heading back to the mound Sunday night. The South Korean lefthander made only one start against the Padres a year ago but was able to earn a win as LA won 9-2. Ryu went 6.1 innings allowing only 1 ER.
