Wednesday night, the Los Angeles Dodgers will give the ball to Hyun-Jin Ryu as they face the New York Mets and Jacob deGrom.  Ryu will be making his 8th start as deGrom makes just his 2nd major league start.

Hyun-Jin Ryu will make the start after coming off of the 15 Day DL with shoulder issues.   Ryu looked ok in a simulated game last week and that was enough to clear him for this start.  In his last start, he gave up 6 runs on 9 hits in 5 innings.  The effort led to a loss and dropped his record to 3 – 2 with a 3.00 ERA.  Last season, Ryu went 14 – 8 with an ERA of 3.00 in 30 starts.   

In 2013, Ryu was 1 – 0 with an ERA of 1.29 in 2 starts against the Mets.   Overall, the Mets have not done well against Ryu and are only batting .200 against the left-hander.

Jacob deGrom took the loss in his first major league start but he still turned in a decent effort.  In 7 innings of work, deGrom allowed just a run on 4 hits with 2 walks and 6 strikeouts.   The start confirmed what observers had seen at the Mets’ Triple-A affiliate in Las Vegas – deGrom was ready for the majors.  For a pitcher to oppose the New York Yankees in their first start is a big thing, but deGrom was fearless. 

If deGrom handles his 2nd start the way that he handled his 1st, he should do fine against the Dodgers.
