Friday evening Hyun-Jin Ryu and the Los Angeles Dodgers will face Brandon McCarthy and the Arizona Diamondbacks.  Ryu will make his 4th start of the season as McCarthy makes his 3rd start.

Ryu is 1 – 1 so far this season but his last outing was a short one.  He lasted only 2 innings as he surrendered 8 runs on 8 hits with 3 walks.   Last season, the 27 year-old left-hander started 30 games, finishing with a 14 - 8 record and an ERA of 3.00.

In 2013, Ryu faced the Diamondbacks 5 times, compiling a record of 1 – 2 with an ERA of 4.65.  In 31 innings against Arizona he gave up 16 runs on 36 hits while striking out 19 and walking 6.  Ryu will be aware of Arizona’s Paul Goldschmidt, who is batting .500 with a home run and 5 RBIs against him.

Brandon McCarthy will be looking to rebound from his last start that saw him give up 6 runs on 7 hits including 3 home runs.  McCarthy has been around long enough to know that he can’t afford to have too many outings like that.  If he doesn’t improve, he could see another season like 2013 when he went 5 – 11 in 22 starts and a 4.53 ERA.

Last season McCarthy had 2 starts against the Dodgers, earning a 1 - 0 record and a 4.38 ERA.  He’s seen Carl Crawford 24 times, but Chone Figgins is batting .389 with 7 hits and 3 RBIs when facing McCarthy.
