Wednesday night, the Los Angeles Angels will take the field behind Jered Weaver as they face the Washington Nationals and Gio Gonzalez. Both pitchers will be making their fifth starts of the season.

Jered Weaver finally got a win in his last start after a 6 inning effort where he allowed a run on 3 hits in 6 innings with 3 walks and 3 strikeouts.  The start was easily Weaver’s best of the season so far and it gave him a 1 – 2 record with an ERA of 4.74.  His ERA is the highest of his career but that’s due to the 5 homers that he has already given up this season.  In 2013, Weaver only gave up 17 homers all season and he is almost halfway to that mark just 4 starts in.

Last season Weaver didn’t face the Nationals and he has only faced three players on the Washington roster.  Denard Span has 22 at-bats against Weaver but only 2 career hits and 1 RBI.

Gio Gonzalez comes into this one after picking up his third win of the season the last time out.  In that start, Gonzalez gave up a run on 4 hits in 7 innings with 1 walk and 7 strikeouts.   Gonzalez has really only had one bad start and that’s why he is 3 – 1 with an ERA of 2.88.  If he continues pitching well, he should better last season’s record of 11 - 8 in 32 starts.

In 2013 Gonzalez didn’t face the Angels but due to his 4 seasons with the Oakland A’s, he has seen many of the Los Angeles hitters.  He will need to keep an eye on Josh Hamilton.  Hamilton is a career .353 hitter against Gonzalez with 2 homers and 4 RBIs.
