Wednesday night Garrett Richards gets the start for the Los Angeles Angels and Roenis Elias gets the start for the Seattle Mariners.  Richards and Elias will be making their second starts of the season. 

Garrett Richards had mixed results in his first outing of the season but he still came away with the win.  In 5 innings of work, Richards only surrendered 1 run on 3 hits while striking out 7.  But he issued 5 walks in the process and that rarely turns out well.  Another area of concern was the 100 pitches thrown in just 5 innings.  In the last 3 seasons, his walks have steadily increased as his workload has but he will have to find some control at some point.

Last season, Richards appeared in 5 games (starting 2) against the Mariners, picking up a 1- 2 record with an ERA of 3.68 in those games.  Kyle Seager has done well against Richards with 6 hits in 13 at-bats with 2 RBIs. 

Rookie left-hander Roenis Elias had a decent debut, going 5 innings and surrendering 1 run on 2 hits with 3 strikeouts, 3 walks and an ERA of 1.80.  During spring training, Elias won all 3 of his starts with 13 strikeouts and 10 walks.  As he progresses, the strikeout to walk ratio should get better. 

With just 1 major league start under his belt, Elias will need to study the scouting report well to get a handle on what he might see against the Mariners.   The experience he gains in this start will help him later on in the season if he faces the Mariners again.
