Wednesday afternoon, Hector Santiago (5 – 9, 3.98 ERA) gets the call for the Los Angeles Angels as they do battle against Jon Lester (16 – 10, 2.41 ERA) and the Oakland Athletics.  Santiago makes his 24th start and 29th appearance as Lester makes his 32nd start.

Hector Santiago took his 2nd straight loss after getting the hook early in his last start.  Santiago was lit up for 7 runs and 7 hits (including a home run) in just an inning of work. He didn’t issue any walks or strike out anyone.  It was the worst outing of the season for the young lefty and the 2nd straight game that he didn’t last more than 2 innings in.   Santiago is just 3 -2 in his last 10 outings.  Last season, Santiago went 4 – 9 with a 3.56 ERA in 23 starts and 11 relief appearances for the Chicago White Sox.

In 2013, Santiago was 1 – 1 with a 2.25 ERA against Oakland in a start and a relief appearance.   This season, eh is without a decision in 3 appearances against the A’s. 

Jon Lester notched his 3rd straight victory in his last outing.  Lester allowed a run (on a solo home run) and 5 hits through 7 innings of work as he struck out 7 and walked 2.  Lester has been on fire as of late and has allowed 3 or fewer runs in 9 of his last 10 starts en route to a 6 -3 record in that span of time.  Last season, Lester started 33 games for the Boston Red Sox and compiled a record of 15 – 8 with a 3.75 ERA.

Lester didn’t face the Angels in 2013 but he has seen them twice since joining the Angels mid-way through this season.    He is 0 -1 in those 2 encounters against Los Angeles.
