Sunday night, Garrett Richards and the Los Angeles Angels will take on Masahiro Tanaka and the New York Yankees.  It will be the 5th start of the year for both pitchers.

Garrett Richards pitched to his second straight no decision in after opening up the season with two straight wins.  In his previous start, he went 6 innings and gave up just 1 run on 1 hit while walking 4 and striking out 6.   But he threw 99 pitches in the process.  Overall, Richards is 2 – 0 with an ERA of 2.52.  Last season, Richards started 17 games and made 30 relief appearances en route to a 7 – 8 record with a save and an ERA of 4.16. 

In 2013, Richards lost his only start against the Yankees despite going 8 innings and allowing 2 runs on 7 hits with a walk and 3 strikeouts.   Yankee hitters are only batting .128 against Richards with Kelly Johnson having the most success.  Johnson is 2 of 3 with a double, a triple and an RBI. 

Masahiro Tanaka continues to impress with each start that he makes.  The Japanese import went to 3 – 0 with an ERA of 2.15 after his last start when he allowed 2 runs on 7 hits in 7.1 innings without issuing a walk and striking out 7.   His 35 strikeouts in 4 starts is a Yankee record and he has only issued 2 free passes all season. 

Tanaka has yet to face the Angels and although they have some powerful hitters, he should do well if he continues to pitch the way he has so far.
