Sunday afternoon, the Los Angeles Angels will take the field behind Hector Santiago as they face the Kansas City Royals and Yordano Ventura. It will be Santiago’s 10th start and 13th appearance and Ventura’s 15th start.

Hector Santiago comes into this game with a 0 – 7 record and an ERA of 4.41.  He made a 1 inning relief appearance a few days ago but his last start was almost 2 weeks ago.  In that start, Santiago surrendered 4 runs on 5 hits in 5.1 innings as he took the loss.  Hopefully, for Santiago’s sake, starting pitcher Tyler Skaggs will return soon and Santiago can go back to the bullpen.  Last season, Santiago was 4 – 9 with a 3.56 ERA in 23 starts and 11 relief appearances with the Chicago White Sox.

In 2013, Santiago was 1 – 0 with a 1.53 ERA in 2 starts and a relief appearance against Kansas City.  In his career, Santiago has handled the Royals well, holding them to a .188 average and 13 hits, a homer and 3 RBIs in 69 at-bats.

Yordano Ventura took the loss in his last start and that lowered his record to 5 – 6 with a 3.20 ERA.  In the loss, Ventura allowed 2 runs and 6 hits (including a home run) in 7 innings as he walked 2 and struck out 6.  Prior to the loss, Ventura had won 3 straight after a 4 game losing streak.  In his rookie campaign in 2013, Ventura started just 3 games en route to a 0 – 1 record with a 3.52 ERA.

Last season, Ventura didn’t face the Angels so he has no experience to fall back on.  But if he delivers another quality start like he has in recent games, he should be able to handle the Angels.
