Friday night, Jered Weaver will take the mound for the Los Angeles Angels as they face Rick Porcello and the Detroit Tigers.   It will be Weaver’s fourth start of the year and Porcello’s third. 

Jered Weaver comes into this game with a 0 – 2 record and an ERA of 5.79.  In his last start, Weaver surrendered 4 runs on 3 hits (including a home run) in 6.2 innings of work.   This season so far, Weaver has given up 5 home runs and 13 runs in 18.2 innings.  In 2013, Weaver only gave up 17 homers the entire season and already he is almost halfway there in 3 starts.

Last season, Weaver only had one start against the Tigers and he didn’t get a decision in that outing.  But he only gave up 1 run on 4 hits in 7 innings.  In his career, he has faced Detroit’s Ian Kinsler 82 times and Kinsler has done well.  Kinsler has a .232 average with 3 home runs and 11 RBIs. 

Rick Porcello has been up and down in his two starts this year.   In his first start, he gave up just a run on 3 hits.  His second start was the worse of the two.  In that outing, he gave up 5 runs on 10 hits (including a home run) in 6.1 innings.  Last season, Porcello was 13 – 8 in 29 starts and 3 relief appearances.

In 2013, Porcello was rocked by the Angels in his 2 starts against them.  He lost both of the starts with an unheard of ERA of 28.80.  Porcello allowed 16 runs on 19 hits in just 5 innings.  It almost sounds unimaginable but sadly for Porcello, it’s true.  Porcello will definitely need to stay away from the Angels’ Howie Kendrick.  Kendrick is batting .327 with 8 RBIs against Porcello.
