Sunday afternoon, the Los Angeles Angels will take the field behind Hector Santiago as they face the Detroit Tigers and Rick Porcello.   It will be the 4th start for Santiago and the 3rd for Porcello.

Hector Santiago is still looking for his first win of the season after going 0 – 2 with an ERA of 4.96 in his first three starts.  He didn’t get the decision in his last outing despite a solid 7 inning effort where he surrendered just 1 run on 5 hits. He ended the game giving up a walk and tallying 3 strikeouts.  The only downside was that the 1 run came on a homer, but it looks like Santiago is getting better with his control in each start.

Last season, Santiago was 0 – 2 with a 3.00 ERA in his 3 starts against the Tigers. In 18 innings, he gave up 10 runs on 17 hits.  He struck out 16 but he walked 10.  Santiago will need to watch out for Detroit’s Andy Dirks.  Dirks has only faced Santiago 3 times but he has 2 hits (including a home run) and 1 RBI.

Rick Porcello’s results in his first 2 starts have been mixed. In his first start, he gave up just a run on 3 hits.  His second start was not as good.  In that outing, he gave up 5 runs on 10 hits (including a home run) in 6.1 innings.  Last season, Porcello was 13 – 8 in 29 starts and 3 relief appearances.

In 2013, Porcello was torched by the Angels in his 2 starts against them.  He went 0 -2 with an unimaginable ERA of 28.80.  Porcello allowed 16 runs on 19 hits in just 5 innings of work.  He will definitely need to stay away from the Angels’ Howie Kendrick.  Kendrick is batting .227 with 8 RBIs against Porcello.
