Thursday night, the Los Angeles Angels will give the ball to Matt Shoemaker (11 – 4, 3.84 ERA) as they square off against the Boston Red Sox and Rubby De La Rosa (4 – 4, 3.79 ERA).  Shoemaker makes his 15th start and 22nd appearance as De La Rosa makes his 13th start. 

Matt Shoemaker added his 2nd straight victory in his last outing in his last start.  In that outing, Shoemaker pitched 5.2 innings and allowed 2 runs and 4 hits (including a homer) as he walked a batter and struck out 6.  Shoemaker has been masterful in his last 10 outings and he is 7 – 3 in those appearances.  Shoemaker spent most of 2013 at Triple-A but he started 1 game for the Angels last season and pitched 5 innings of shutout ball.

Shoemaker pitched against the Red Sox less than 2 weeks ago and he earned a victory in a 3 inning appearance after striking out 4 of the 9 batters he faced without allowing a single hit.

Rubby De La Rosa escaped with a no-decision in his last start.  He allowed 6 runs and 9 hits (including a home run) in just 4 innings of work.  He walked 4 and struck out just 2.  De La Rosa is just 3 – 3 in his last 10 starts and his record could have been worse.   Last season, De La Rosa made 11 relief appearances en route to a 0 – 2 record and a 5.56 ERA.

De La Rosa just got a victory over the Angels less than 2 weeks ago after holding Los Angeles to a run (on a solo homer) and 5 hits in 7 innings of work.
