Sunday night, the Los Angeles Angels will give the ball to Hector Santiago as they face the Atlanta Braves and Mike Minor.  It will be Santiago’s 9th start and 11th appearance and Minor’s 9th start.

Hector Santiago pitched to a no-decision his last time out despite a solid outing.  He surrendered just 3 hits and a walk while striking out 8 in 6 scoreless innings of work. Coming into this start, Santiago brings a 0 – 6 record with a 4.15 ERA but he hasn’t been as bad as his record indicates.  He has split this season between Triple-A Salt Lake and the big league club but last season in the Majors he went 4 – 9 with a 3.56 ERA in 23 starts and 11 relief appearances for the Chicago White Sox.

In 2013, Santiago didn’t pitch against the Braves and he has only opposed 2 of their hitters in the past. Gerald Laird is 0 for 1 against Santiago while Ryan Doumit is 3 for 6 with an RBI.

Mike Minor was lit up in his last outing and he was lucky to escape with a no-decision that kept his record at 2- 4 as his ERA shot up over a full run to 4.31.  In that start, Minor was torched for 8 runs and 11 hits (including a home run) in just 4 innings as he walked 3 and struck out 3.  It was Minor’s worst outing of the season and the 2nd time that he surrendered 6 or more runs in less than 5 innings.  Last season, Minor was solid en route to a 13 – 9 record with an ERA of 3.21 in 32 starts.

In 2013, Minor didn’t face the Angels and he has only pitched against 4 of their hitters in the past. Only 2 of them (Raul Ibanez and David Freese) have hits off of Minor.
