Friday night, the Kansas City Royals will give the ball to Jason Vargas as they face the Toronto Blue Jays and J.A. Happ.  Jason Vargas will be making his 12th start as J.A. Happ makes his 6th start and 9th appearance. 

Jason Vargas pitched to a no-decision in his last start despite giving up just a run on 3 hits in 6.1 innings of work as he walked 5 and struck out 6.  Coming into this start, Vargas has a record of 4 – 2 and an ERA of 3.55.  Last season, Vargas posted a record of 9 – 8 with a 4.02 ERA in 24 starts for the Los Angeles Angels. 

In 2013, Vargas didn’t pitch against the Blue Jays but he has a start against Toronto this season.  In that outing, he pitched to a no-decision after allowing 5 runs on 10 hits (including a home run) in 6.1 innings.  Vargas didn’t issue a walk as he struck out 5.

J.A. Happ picked up his 3rd straight win in his last outing and that boosted his record to 4 – 1 with an ERA of 3.34.  In that start, Happ pitched 7 innings of scoreless ball and allowed just 4 hits and 3 walks while striking out 7.  The start allowed Happ to lower his ERA by over a full run.  Last season, Happ was 5 - 7 with a 4.56 ERA in 18 starts. 

In 2013, Happ was 1 – 1 with an ERA of 7.00 in 2 starts against the Royals.   Happ will have to pitch carefully to Kansas City’s Norichika Aoki since Aoki is 4 of 7 with a home run and 2 RBIs against the left-hander.
