Saturday afternoon, Wade Davis is expected to get the start for the Kansas City Royals as they face Drew Hutchison and the Toronto Blue Jays. Davis would make his 1st start of the season and 22nd appearance as Hutchison makes his 12th start.
With starting pitcher Yordano Ventura expected to miss his next turn in the rotation, it’s expected that reliever Wade Davis will come out of the bullpen to make the start in this one. Although he was worked exclusively from the bullpen this season, Davis has experience as a starting pitcher. This season, he is 4- 1 with a 1.48 ERA in 21 relief appearances. Last season, Davis was just 8 - 11 with a 5.32 ERA in 24 starts and 7 relief appearances.
In 2013, Davis didn’t start against the Blue Jays but he has faced them twice this season. In his last appearance against Toronto (on May 29th), he got a win after pitching 2 scoreless, hitless innings while striking out 2.
Drew Hutchison picked up his 3rd straight win in his last outing and that gave him a 4 - 3 record with an ERA of 3.88. In that start, Hutchison gave up 5 runs on 7 hits (including 3 homers) in just 5 innings of work. He walked 4 without striking out a single batter. Despite the final line in that start, Hutchison appears to be settling down and pitching well in for his first full season since 2012 thanks to Tommy John surgery.
Hutchison faced the Royals earlier in the season and he didn’t fare well in that outing. He took the loss after allowing 4 runs on 5 hits in 7 innings of work. He walked 1 while striking out 5.
