Jason Vargas will be looking to get back to his winning ways when he takes the mound for the Kansas City Royals against the Seattle Mariners, who will start Brandon Maurer.

Lefty Jason Vargas had his second straight poor start for the Royals when he was only able to go five innings against the Detroit Tigers and gave yo a season-high seven earned runs. He allowed 11 hits, including two homes, in that outing while striking out three and walking two. His ERA went up from 2.40 to 3.50 in that game, but he does only have 10 walks in 46.1 innings this season.

Robinson Cano doesn't have a home run against Vargas in his career, but he is 9-for-20 with two doubles and three RBI in their matchups. Kyle Seager, on the other hand, has just one hit in 10 at-bats against Vargas.

Brandon Maurer picked up his first win of 2014 this past Sunday when he was able to beat the Houston Astros. He didn't pitch particularly well, though, giving up four earned runs on six hits while striking out three and walking two in the outing. He still has a poor 6.92 ERA on the season and a 1.538 WHIP.

Billy Butler is 2-for-4 against Maurer in his career with two RBI. Eric Hosmer is also 2-for-4 against him with a double and one RBI.
