Wednesday afternoon, James Shields and the Kansas City Royals will take on Andrew Cashner and the San Diego Padres.  Both pitchers will be making their 8th trips to the mound.

James Shields took a loss in his last start that saw his record fall to 3 – 3 and his ERA rise to 3.11. Shields was torched for 8 runs on 12 hits (including a home run) in 6.1 innings as he walked 1 and struck out 3.   It was his worst start of what has been a solid season for Shields.  Last season, he went 13 - 9 with a 3.15 ERA in 34 starts.

In 2013, Shields didn’t face the Padres and he has only faced 7 on the San Diego roster in his career. Only two batters have hits against Shields, with Carlos Quentin going 4 for 23 including a solo home run. 

Andrew Cashner dropped his 3rd straight game in his last outing.  In that start, Cashner fell to 2 – 4 with an ERA of 2.72 after giving up 2 runs on 4 hits in 6 innings of work.  He allowed issued 3 walks while striking out just 1.  Last season, Cashner was 10 – 9 with an ERA of 3.09 in 26 starts and 5 relief appearances.

In 2013, Cashner didn’t face the Royals and he has only seen 4 of their hitters in the past.  Norichika Aoki is 2 of 5 against Cashner and Omar Infante is 1 for 2 with an RBI when facing the right-hander.
