On Friday night, Jeremy Guthrie (6-9) will be looking to put his poor month of July behind him when he and the Kansas City Royals face Sonny Gray (12-3) and the Oakland Athletics.

Right-hander Jeremy Guthrie was able to beat the Cleveland Indians at home last Saturday, but he didn't pitch particularly well in that game. He lasted 5.2 innings in that start and allowed five runs on 10 hits while striking out four batters and walking two. On the year, Guthrie now has a 4.70 ERA and he has already given up 19 home runs.

A's catcher John Jaso only has four hits in 18 at-bats versus Guthrie, but he also has two home runs and four RBI against him. Outfielder Coco Crisp is 8-for-25 against the right-hander with a triple and an RBI.

Sonny Gray was able to extend his winning streak to five games last Saturday when he defeated the Texas Rangers on the road. He gave up just one run in 6.2 innings of work that day and struck out five while walking four. He now has a very good 2.65 ERA to go along with his league-leading 12 wins and he has struck out 121 batters in 139 innings.

Royals veteran Raul Ibanez is the only player on Kansas City who has gone up against Gray and is just 1-for-8 against him with one strikeout.
