On Sunday afternoon the Kansas City Royals will give the ball to Jason Vargas as he faces Kevin Correia and the Minnesota Twins.  Both pitchers will be making their 3rd trips to the hill this season.

Jason Vargas was strong in his last start as he got the win based on his 8 inning, 4 hit and 1 run performance.   Vargas had 2 strikeouts and a walk but he did give up a home run in the 9th inning which could have been due to fatigue considering that he had thrown over 100 pitches at that point.   In 2013, Vargas was 9 – 8 with an ERA of 4.02 in 24 starts for the Los Angeles Angels.

While with the Angels in 2013, Vargas was lit up by the Minnesota Twins in his only start.  He took a loss after surrendering 5 runs on 9 hits in just a span of 3.1 innings.  This time around, he will keep an eye on Eduardo Nunez.  Nunez is batting .417 with a double, a triple and 3 RBIs against Vargas.

Kevin Correia didn’t look to good in his last start.  Correia surrendered 6 runs on 9 hits (including a home run) in 5.2 innings.  Last season for the Twins, Correia posted a 9 – 13 record with an ERA of 4.18 in 31 starts.  His strikeouts were up from the 2012 season but walks and home runs were basically the same.

In 2013, Correia had a 0 - 2 record in 5 starts against Kansas City.  He gave up 16 runs and 38 hits in 27.1 innings of work.   Kansas City’s Mike Moustakas owns a .455 average against Correia with 5 hits (including 2 doubles) and 2 RBIs in 11 at-bats.
