Wednesday night, the Kansas City Royals will take the field behind Jason Vargas (11 – 10, 3.59 ERA) as they square off against the Cleveland Indians and Trevor Bauer (5 – 8, 4.06 ERA).  Vargas makes his 30th start as Bauer makes his 26th.

Jason Vargas lost his 3rd straight game in his last outing.  In the loss, Vargas was torched for 5 runs and 9 hits in just 3.1 innings of work. He struck out a batter without issuing any walks.  Vargas has struggled mightily in recent weeks and he is just 3 – 6 in his last 10 trips to the hill.  Last season, Vargas posted a record of 9 – 8 with a 4.02 ERA in 24 starts for the Los Angeles Angels.

Vargas didn’t face the Indians in 2013 but he has seen them 3 times this season.  In those 3 encounters, Vargas is 1 -1. 

Trevor Bauer escaped with a no-decision in his last outing.  In 6 innings of work, Bauer gave up 3 runs on 4 hits (including 2 home runs).  He struck out 6 without issuing any walks.  The last few weeks (and frankly the whole season) haven’t been that great for Bauer.  He hasn’t had a win in nearly a month and is just 1 -2 in his last 10 starts.  In 2013, Bauer started just 4 games on the way to a 1 - 2 record and a 5.29 ERA. 

Bauer didn’t pitch against the Royals last season but he has started 2 games against them this season.  In those starts, Bauer is 0 – 1.
