Saturday night, Jeremy Guthrie will get the ball for the Kansas City Royals as they face Wei-Yin Chen and the Baltimore Orioles.  Both pitchers will be starting their 5th game of the season.

Jeremy Guthrie got his 1st loss of the season after giving up 4 runs on 10 hits (including 2 home runs) in 6.1 innings of work.  Guthrie’s record fell to 2 - 1 and his ERA rose to 4.68.  Guthrie seems to have a problem giving up the long ball with 4 homers in his last 2 starts and 5 overall compared to 30 homers in 33 starts last season.  He was 15 – 12 with a 4.04 ERA in 2013.

Guthrie won both of his starts against the Orioles last season with an ERA of 1.50.  He allowed 3 runs on 13 hits in 12 innings of work against Baltimore.  Guthrie will need to pitch away from Nelson Cruz as Cruz has a double and 4 RBIs against the right-hander. 

Wei-Yin Chen is 3 – 1 coming into this game but his ERA is high at 4.91.   His last start produced his third straight win even though he lasted just 5 innings and gave up 3 runs on 4 hits with 3 walks and 5 strikeouts.  His high ERA and the fact that he is not lasting more than 5 innings in most of his starts are a cause for concern.  Last season, he was 12 - 11 in 32 starts with an ERA of 4.02.

In 2013, Chen failed to get a decision in either of his two starts against the Royals.  Chen will have to watch Kansas City’s Eric Hosmer.  Hosmer is a career .455 hitter with 2 home runs and 4 RBIs against Chen.
