Sunday afternoon the Houston Astros will send Brett Oberholtzer to the mound to face Martin Perez and the Texas Rangers. Both pitchers will be making their third starts of the year.

Brett Oberholtzer has been rough in his 2 starts this season. He earned his 2nd loss in his last start where he gave up 3 runs on 3 hits in 5.1 innings.   Last season, Oberholtzer struggled as well, compiling a 4 – 5 record in 10 starts (with 3 relief appearances).  But Oberholtzer is just in his 2nd major league season and this season’s losses are not entirely his fault.

In 2013, Oberholtzer faced the Rangers twice (1 time starting) with a 0 – 1 record and a 2.70 ERA.  He gave up 3 runs on 10 hits in 10 innings of work.  Adrian Beltre has been a nemesis to Oberholtzer with 3 hits and an RBI in 4 at-bats.

Martin Perez has had a fair beginning to his 3rd major league season.  So far, he is 1 – 0 with an ERA of 4.50 and his numbers are consistent but not great.  In his last start, he surrendered 4 runs on 8 hits with 3 strikeouts and 3 walks while throwing 101 pitches in just 6.1 innings. 

Last season, Perez was a perfect 2 - 0 in 2 starts against the Astros with an ERA of 2.25.  He struck out 16 while only walking 3.  Houston’s Chris Carter could be trouble for Perez though.  Carter is 6 of 11 (a .545 average) with 2 home runs and 4 RBIs against Perez.
