Thursday afternoon, Dallas Keuchel (10 – 8, 3.11 ERA) takes the mound for the Houston Astros as they take on Brandon McCarthy (7 – 12, 4.24 ERA) and the New York Yankees.  Keuchel makes his 24th start as McCarthy makes his 26th.

Dallas Keuchel missed getting the decision in his last outing despite a decent effort.  In 7 innings of work, Keuchel allowed 3 runs on 6 hits (including a home run) as he walked 3 and struck out 8.  Keuchel is giving the Astros a lot of innings but his workload isn’t translating into wins.  In his last 10 starts, he is just 2 – 5.  Last season, Keuchel was 6 – 10 with a 5.15 ERA in 22 starts and 9 relief appearances.

Keuchel didn’t face the Yankees last season and he has only seen 5 of their hitters before. New York’s Chase Headley is 2 for 3 against Keuchel with a home run.

Brandon McCarthy dropped his 2nd straight game in his last start.  In the loss, McCarthy gave up 4 runs and 7 hits in 6.1 innings.  He walked a batter and struck out 7.  McCarthy is on a mini losing streak after winning 4 of his first 5 starts for the Yankees after coming from the Arizona Diamondbacks.  He had a losing record (3 -10) in Arizona but he has turned it around in New York (4 – 2).  Last season, McCarthy went 5 – 11 with a 4.53 ERA in 22 starts for the Diamondbacks.

McCarthy didn’t face the Astros last season but he has started against them earlier this season.  In that outing, McCarthy took the loss after allowing 5 runs and 8 hits (including 2 homers) in 6 innings of work.
