Tuesday evening, Collin McHugh gets the call for the Houston Astros as they take on Jeremy Guthrie and the Kansas City Royals. McHugh makes his 7th start as Guthrie makes his 11th.

Collin McHugh took his second straight loss in his last start and that dropped his record to 2 – 3 with a 3.32 ERA.  In that outing, McHugh gave up just 2 runs on 4 hits (including a home run) in 7 innings of work with 2 walks and 7 strikeouts.  But without any run support, McHugh’s effort was wasted.  Amazingly, he already has done better than last season when he went 0 – 4 with a 10.04 ERA in 5 starts and 2 relief appearances with the New York Mets and the Colorado Rockies. 

In 2013, McHugh didn’t face the Royals and in his career, he has only faced on Kansas City hitter.  Norichika Aoki is 2 for 3 with an RBI against McHugh. 

Jeremy Guthrie got a no-decision in his last start despite a solid effort from the veteran right-hander.  Guthrie surrendered just a run on 3 hits through 7 innings with 2 walks and 2 strikeouts.  But his offense didn’t appear while he was on the mound.   Guthrie brings a 2 – 3 record with an ERA of 4.39 in to this one and those numbers are in line with last season’s when he went 15 – 12 with a 4.04 ERA in 33 starts. 

In 2013, Guthrie was lit up in his only start against the Astros.  Houston got to him for 6 runs on 8 hits (including 2 homers) in 5 innings of work to deal him the loss.   This season, he pitched to a no-decision against the Astros after allowing 4 runs on 6 hits (including 2 home runs) in 6 innings.
