Saturday afternoon, the Detroit Tigers will take the field behind Max Scherzer (13 – 4, 3.24 ERA) as they face the Toronto Blue Jays and Marcus Stroman (7 – 3, 3.49 ERA).  It will be the 24th start for Scherzer and the 13th start and 18th appearance for Stroman.

Max Scherzer took the loss in his last outing and it was his first defeat in nearly 2 months.  But the loss wasn’t Scherzer’s fault as he surrendered just 2 runs on 9 hits through 7 innings while walking 3 and striking out 4.  Prior to the loss, Scherzer had gone 6 - 1 in his last 8 starts with the only loss coming in mid-June.  Last season, Scherzer won the Cy Young after going 21 – 3 with an ERA of 2.90 in 32 starts.

In 2013, Scherzer won his only start against the Blue Jays.  But he will have to keep an eye on Jose Bautista.  Bautista is 8 for 14 (.571) against Scherzer with a homer and 3 RBIs.

Marcus Stroman was lit up in his last outing and it led to a loss.  It was a short outing for Stroman as he allowed 5 runs and 7 hits in just 3 innings.  He walked a batter and struck out 1.   The loss broke a 3 game win streak for Stroman where he had allowed just a run in 3 outings.  That stretch of games showed the promise that many in the Toronto organization saw in Stroman. 

Stroman has never faced the Tigers but if he can shake off his last start and regain the form that gave him 3 wins in a row, he might add another victory to his stats.
