Thursday night, the Detroit Tigers will take the field behind David Price (12 – 8, 3.12 ERA) as they square off against the Tampa Bay Rays and Alex Cobb (8 – 6, 3.19 ERA).  Price makes his 27th start as Cobb makes his 20th.

David Price picked up his 1st victory for the Tigers in his last start.   In 8 innings of work, Price surrendered a run on 3 hits while walking 3 and striking out 7.  It was Price’s best outing since coming from the Tampa Bay Rays.  In his last 10 starts, Price is 7 – 1.  Last season, he posted a record of 10 – 8 with a 3.33 ERA in 27 starts for the Rays. 

Price will take the mound for the first time this season against his former team but he has seen some of the Tampa Bay hitters in real game situations before.  Four of the Rays have faced Price in the past and Yunel Escobar is batting .261 with a homer and 2 RBIs off of Price.

Alex Cobb earned a victory in his last outing after holding his opponents scoreless.  In 7.1 shutout innings, Cobb gave up just 6 hits and a walk while striking out 8 batters.  He hasn’t lost a game since the end of June and is 6 – 1 in his last 10 outings.  In 2013, Cobb finished the season with an 11 – 3 record and a 2.76 ERA in 22 starts.

Last season, Cobb missed getting the decision in his only start against the Tigers despite pitching 7.2 innings of scoreless ball and allowing only 5 hits and 3 walks while striking out 7.  Earlier this season, Cobb beat the Tigers after holding them to 3 runs and 5 hits in 5 innings.
