Thursday afternoon, the Detroit Tigers will give the ball to Rick Porcello as they square off against the Oakland Athletics and Jesse Chavez. Porcello will be making his 10th start as Chavez makes his 11th. 

Rick Porcello took a loss in his last outing that dropped his record to a still impressive 7 - 2 with an ERA of 3.88.  Porcello was lit up for 8 runs on 12 hits (including 2 home runs) in 5.1 innings of work.  Porcello walked 2 while striking out 5. At this rate, Porcello is almost certain to post better numbers than 2013’s results when he went 13 – 8 with a 4.32 ERA in 29 starts and 3 relief appearances.

Last season, Porcello pitched just 2 innings in his only start against the A’s.  But in his career, Porcello has pitched well against the A’s and has held them to a .224 batting average.   In 58 at-bats, the lineup has 13 hits 2 homers and 4 RBIS against Porcello.

Jesse Chavez saw his record drop to 4 – 2 and his ERA rise slightly to 2.61 after taking a loss his last time out.  In that start, Chavez allowed 4 runs on 8 hits (including a home run) in 5.1 innings of work.   He walked 1 while striking out 4.  Last season, Chavez worked from the bullpen and compiled a record of 2 – 4 with a save and an ERA of 3.92 in 35 relief appearances. 

In 2013, Chavez didn’t face the Tigers but his is familiar with their lineup.  Miguel Cabrera could be an issue for the right-hander as he is 3 for 5 with a home run and 4 RBIs against Chavez.
