Saturday night, the Detroit Tigers will take the field behind Drew Smyly as they take on Danny Duffy and the Kansas City Royals.  It will be Smyly’s 3rd start (and 5th appearance) this season and Duffy’s 1st.

Drew Smyly pitched to a no decision in his last outing after allowing 2 runs on 6 hits (including a home run) with a walk and 7 strikeouts.  The start left Smyly’s record at 1 – 1 as his ERA dropped to 3.60.  Last season, Smyly made 63 relief appearances with a 6 – 0 record and an ERA of 2.37. 

In 2013, Smyly was 1 – 0 with a 5.40 ERA in 7 relief appearances against the Royals.  Smyly won’t be looking forward to facing Kansas City’s Billy Butler.  Butler is 5 of 6 with a double in his duels with Smyly. 

Danny Duffy gets the start in this one as he replaces the injured Bruce Chen.  So far this season, Duffy has worked exclusively out of the bullpen but if Chen is out for an extended amount of time, Duffy could be getting the nod more frequently.  Duffy brings in a 1 - 1 record and an ERA of 2.16.  Last season, Duffy started 5 games and came away with a 2 – 0 record and an ERA of 1.85. 

In 2013, Duffy didn’t face the Tigers but he has knowledge of the lineup.  Detroit’s Miguel Cabrera has done well against the left-hander.  Cabrera is 4 of 13 with 2 doubles and 2 RBIs against Duffy.
