Sunday afternoon, the Detroit Tigers will send Max Scherzer to the mound as they square off against the Cleveland Indians and Josh Tomlin.  Scherzer will be making his 16th start as Tomlin makes his 9th start and 10th appearance.

Max Scherzer took the loss after a brutal outing that lowered his record to 8 – 3 as his ERA rose to 3.84.  Scherzer only lasted 4 innings as he surrendered 10 runs on 10 hits (including 2 home runs) while walking a batter and striking out 5.  The 10 runs tied a career high and were more than he allowed in his previous 3 starts combined.  But if Scherzer shakes off this start he should be able to challenge his results from last season when he posted a 21 – 3 record with a 2.90 ERA in 32 starts as he captured the 2013 AL Cy Young award. 

In 2013, Scherzer was 3 - 0 with a 2.70 ERA in 4 starts against the Indians.  This season, Scherzer lost his only start against Cleveland after allowing 7 runs on 12 hits (including a home run) in 7 innings. 

Josh Tomlin lost his 2nd straight in his last start and that evened his record at 4 – 4 with an ERA of 3.86.  In the outing, Tomlin surrendered 6 runs on 11 hits (including 2 homers) in 5.1 innings.  He didn’t issue any walks as he struck out 4.  In his last 2 starts, Tomlin has averaged over 100 pitches in about 5 innings of work for each start.  Tomlin pitched just 2 innings of relief work in 2013 after undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2012.

Tomlin got the win in his only start against Detroit this season after allowing a run (on a solo homer) and 2 hits in just 3 innings of work as he walked 1 and struck out 6.
