Tuesday night, Justin Verlander and the Detroit Tigers will face Jose Quintana and the Chicago White Sox.  Both pitchers will be taking the mound for the 5th time this season.

Justin Verlander will come into this one with extra rest after his expected start on Sunday was rained out.  Verlander won his previous start (which was against the White Sox) after a 7 inning effort where he allowed 2 runs on 8 hits (including a homer) with 2 walks and 7 strikeouts.  The win improved Verlander’s record to 3 - 1 with a 2.18 ERA.  In 2013, Verlander was 13 – 12 with a 3.46 ERA in 34 starts. 

Last season, Verlander lost both starts against the White Sox.  He compiled an ERA of 5.54 after allowing 12 runs on 22 hits (including 3 homers) in 13 innings of work.    He will need to watch out for Chicago’s Paul Konerko.  Konerko is only batting .172 against Verlander but he has 2 home runs and 5 RBIs in those at-bats.   

Jose Quintana lost his 2nd straight game in his last start, which was against the Detroit Tigers.  In that outing, Quintana gave up 3 runs on 7 hits (including a homer) without issuing a walk while striking out 3 in 6 innings of work.  His record fell to 1 – 2 with an ERA of 3.90.  Last season, Quintana went 9 – 7 with an ERA of 3.51 in 33 starts.

In 2013, Quintana was 1 - 0 in 2 starts against the Tigers.  In 15 innings, Quintana allowed 3 runs on 11 hits with 3 walks and 13 strikeouts. Detroit’s Rajai Davis is 8 of 17 against Quintana with a homer and an RBI.
