Friday night, the Detroit Tigers will take the field behind Max Scherzer as they square off against the Boston Red Sox and Jon Lester.  Both pitchers will be getting the ball for the 9th time this season.

Max Scherzer picked up his 5th straight win in his last start and comes into this game with a 5 – 1 record and an ERA of  2.04.  His last outing wasn’t his best as he gave up 3 runs on 5 hits (including a home run) in 6 innings with 4 walks and 6 strikeouts.   In 2013, Scherzer won the AL Cy Young award after going 21 - 3 with a 2.90 ERA in 32 starts.

Last season, Scherzer was 1 – 1 with a 2.57 in 2 starts against the Red Sox.  Scherzer might consider pitching around Boston’s David Ortiz since Ortiz is batting .467 with 3 homers and 6 RBIs against the Detroit right-hander.   

Jon Lester got a win in his last start and that gave him a 4- 4 record with an ERA of 2.75.  In that outing, Lester was solid after allowing 3 runs on 4 hits in 7 innings with 3 walks and 8 strikeouts.   In 2013, Lester went 15 – 8 with a 3.75 ERA in 33 starts.

Last season, Lester was undefeated with a 4.26 ERA in 2 starts against the Tigers.   Detroit’s Torii Hunter has had no problem hitting Lester in the past as he owns a .478 average with 3 doubles when facing the left-hander.
