Tuesday night, the Colorado Rockies and Christian Friedrich will take on the Washington Nationals and Stephen Strasburg.  Friedrich makes his 3rd start as Strasburg makes his 18th.

Christian Friedrich comes into this one with a 0 – 2 record after taking the loss in his last start. In that outing, Friedrich gave up 5 runs on 9 hits (including 2 home runs) in just 4 innings of work.  He walked a batter while striking out 8.  Friedrich is still making his way back from a stress fracture in his back that caused him to miss the latter part of the 2012 season and the entire 2013 campaign.  At Colorado’s Triple-A affiliate this season, he was 1- 8 with an ERA of 7.89 in 13 starts.

Friedrich had a start against the Nationals in 2012 and he lost that one after allowing 4 runs and 9 hits (including a homer) in 4.1 innings. Six of the Nationals have faces him before and 5 of them have hits off the lefty with Adam LaRoche owning a homer.

Stephen Strasburg evened his record to 6 – 6 with a 3.70 ERA after losing his last start.  In the loss, Strasburg was lit up for 7 runs and 8 hits (including 2 homers) in just 4.2 innings. He walked 3 while only striking out 2.  There are some concerns that Strasburg may be encountering problems with his delivery.  Even if he doesn’t fix things, he should be able to match or better his results from 2013 when he went 8 - 9 with a 3.00 ERA in 30 starts.

Last season, Strasburg won his only start against the Rockies after pitching 7 innings of 1 run, 5 hit ball. The 8 Rockies that have faced Strasburg before have been held to a .250 average with 10 this and 2 RBIs in 40 at-bats.
