Saturday afternoon, Christian Bergman gets the call for the Colorado Rockies as they take on Ryan Vogelsong and the San Francisco Giants. Bergman makes just his 2nd Major League start as Vogelsong makes his 14th start of the season.
Christian Bergman took the loss in his Major League debut despite a solid outing from the young right-hander. In that start, Bergman allowed just 2 runs on 6 hits in 6 innings of work. He walked 2 and struck out 4. But without much run support from his offense, Bergman was saddled with the loss. The right-hander was called up from Triple-A Colorado Springs to replace starting pitcher Jordan Lyles after Lyles suffered a broken left hand. At Colorado Springs this season, Bergman went 4 – 4 with a 3.84 ERA in 12 starts.
Without any experience against the Giants, Bergman will have to take any knowledge learned from the scouting report and convert that information into a plan of attack against San Francisco.
Ryan Vogelsong took the loss his last time out and that lowered his record to 4 - 3 with a 3.84 ERA. In that start, Vogelsong was torched for 6 runs on 9 hits in 6 innings as he walked 2 and struck out 6. Vogelsong already has as many wins as last season when he went 4 – 6 with a 5.73 ERA in 19 starts.
In 2013, Vogelsong didn’t factor in the decision in his only start against the Rockies. In that start, he allowed 5 runs and 8 hits (including a home run) while walking 2 without striking out a single batter. This season, Vogelsong lost to the Rockies after getting lit up for 5 runs on 6 hits (including 3 home runs) in just 1.1 innings of work.
