Tyler Chatwood and the Colorado Rockies will be taking on Henderson Alvarez and the Miami Marlins in a game that will feature two young starters hoping to build upon their 2013 campaigns. Chatwood had 20 starts for the Rockies last year and finished with an 8-5 record and a 3.15 ERA in 111.1 innings. 2013 was his third season in the big leagues and easily his best. The thing that helped him the most was his walk rate, which dropped from 4.6 walks per nine innings in 2012 to 3.3 in 2013.

Chatwood hasn't faced any of the current Marlins more than three times, so there will be a bit of a feeling out process between the pitcher and the hitters. He has faced Giancarlo Stanton twice in his career, with Chatwood striking him out in one of the at-bats and Stanton hitting a home run in the other.

Henderson Alvarez made just 17 starts for the Marlins in 2013, but he did enough to get back into the rotation this year. His 5 K/9 rate was pretty low, but he was able to use his command to keep his ERA (3.59) and WHIP (1.140) low enough to be successful.

Alvarez has never faced any of the current Rockies, so he will have a little bit of an advantage against them going into this one. He has always been quite a bit worse against lefties than against righties, so a left-handed hitter like Carlos Gonzalez could have some success against him.
