The Colorado Rockies will send Juan Nicasio to the mound on Thursday to face the Miami Marlins’ Jacob Turner. Each pitcher will be making his first start of the new season and will be looking to start with a win. Nicasio is starting his 4th season with the Rockies and his workload has steadily grown in that time span. After two seasons with just 13 and 11 starts respectively, he started 31 games for the Rockies in 2013. Nicasio doubled his strikeouts in 2013 from 2012 but tripled his number of walks. And his ERA was still high at 5.14, which obviously could be better.

Nicasio faced Miami just once last season and didn’t get the decision despite pitching shutout ball for 7 innings. This time he will keep an eye on Giancarlo Stanton, who has two doubles and an RBI in six at bats against him.

Jacob Turner starts his 3rd season with the Marlins after two seasons in Detroit. In 20 starts for the Marlins last season, Turner was just 3 – 8 with an ERA of 3.74. Turner’s 77 strikeouts were a little too close to his 54 walks for most fans. The 11 home runs that he gave up were more than he had in the previous season.

Turner lost both starts against the Rockies last season and will be wary of Colorado’s Nolan Arenado and Michael Cuddyer. Arenado and Cuddyer are both .500 hitters against Turner.
