Tuesday night, Franklin Morales and the Colorado Rockies will face James shields and the Kansas City Royals.  It will be Morales’ 8th start and 9th appearance as Shields makes his 9th start.

Franklin Morales took the loss in his last start after allowing 5 runs on 6 hits (including a homer) in 6 innings of work.  Morales walked 3 and struck out 5 as his record fell to 3 – 2 with an ERA of 5.18.  Last season, Morales was 2 - 2 with a 4.62 ERA in 1 start and 19 relief appearances for the Boston Red Sox.

In 2013, Morales didn’t start against the Royals but he has experience against their lineup.  His biggest concern would be Omar Infante if Infante is in the lineup.  Infante is 1 of 2 with a homer and 2 RBIS against Morales.

James Shields was impressive in his last outing as he pitched 7 shutout innings, allowing just 7 hits and 2 walks while striking out 4.  The win pushed his record to 4 – 3 with a 2.70 ERA.   Last season, Shields was 13 – 9 with an ERA of 3.15 in 34 starts.

In 2013, Shields didn’t pitch against the Rockies and his experience against the Colorado lineup is limited to just 6 batters.  But they have all done well against Shields.  The best results have come from Justin Morneau, who is a .341 hitter with 4 homers and 10 RBIS against the right-hander.
